My family and I have been looking for a scenic weekend spot to unwind a bit and Matapouri bay seemed to fit perfectly in the category. It’s a 3-hour long drive from Flatbush, where we live, to the northland. This place is known for its beautiful white sand coastal beach and same as the other visitors, we came out here to check the mermaid pools (a set of rock pools that are accessible at low tide).
We wandered around the area and had our lunch while we waited for the tide to head out. The kids had so much fun playing around the shoreline and of course for me this was a huge playground for some landscape photography. While I took most of the photos on this post with my workhorse dlsr Nikon D610, I was blown away how the photos came out from my Dji mavic. The quality was almost the same level of the D610, without pixel peeping at the image. It’ll surely be now a regular on my camera bag even for photoshoots!
Unfortunately, I didn’t have any photos of the aforementioned pool as I left my camera with my wife before braving the trail to get to the pool with my buddy Aris, assuming we can easily scout the area then comeback to pick up the rest of the group. Truth be told, climbing wasn’t easy. It was steep and slippery as hell! I had to unlock my spiderman skills to climb up the most difficult part of the trail (a 90-degree steep section, well not really, but to me I felt it was). So we just took a quick peek of the pool when we reached the top of the hill and told myself, twice, not to try this again.
So if you’re heading up north, be sure to visit this place for some relaxation and mini adventure.
